01Short answer
Mamdani is Muslim and has been described in official biography as one of the first Muslim members of the New York State Assembly.
That matters as representation in a city with large Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and non religious communities.
Religion should not become a loyalty test. The public test is equal protection, hate crime prevention, school policy, emergency response and fair access to city services.
02Why it matters
Mamdani's religion has been used both as a milestone and as an attack line. A mayor cannot allow either Islamophobia or antisemitism to become normal political currency.
The city record should be judged by protection for all faith communities, clear language after threats and consistent treatment by agencies.
