Short answer

The official Assembly biography says Mamdani was born and raised in Kampala, moved to New York City at age seven and became naturalised as an American citizen in 2018.

That is enough for his city office. Naturalised citizens can serve as mayor of New York City.

The separate presidential question is different because the United States Constitution has a natural born citizen requirement. That issue is covered on the Mamdani for President page.

Why citizenship matters

Citizenship searches often mix biography with eligibility. For mayoral office, the key public fact is that Mamdani is an American citizen and was elected to city office.

For national office, the legal barrier is different. A naturalised citizen can hold many public offices but cannot run for president unless the constitutional rule changes or is somehow reinterpreted by courts in a way that has not happened.

Public record

The relevant public record is his official biography, election result, oath of office and city authority.
